Mission
The Halton Youth Symphony's mission is to inspire, encourage and challenge young musicians to build their musical skills through the experience of various forms of orchestral music. We strive to create an enjoyable environment that promotes teamwork, leadership and community involvement.
History
The Halton Youth Symphony (HYS) is a non-profit organization consisting of two orchestras. The Halton Youth Chamber Orchestra (HYCO) is a string orchestra of approximately 41 musicians aged 9 to 14 years. The Halton Youth Symphony Orchestra (HYSO) is a full symphony orchestra of approximately 53 musicians between 12 and 19 years of age. HYS musicians learn to play their instruments with greater skill, to develop discipline and to appreciate the expertise and teamwork required by orchestral works.
The HYS began in the basement of Appleby College Chapel in 1975 under the direction of Jean Grieve. During the first season, there were only twelve musicians. Known first as the Oakville Youth Symphony, then as the Sheridan Symphony, the Halton Youth Symphony has now grown to include approximately 94 musicians in two orchestras.
Leadership
The organization is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors. The parents of HYS musicians elect up to 15 Directors at the Annual General Meeting. From among themselves, Directors elect an executive to serve in the following five positions: President, Vice-President, Executive Director, Secretary and Treasurer. The Directors also appoint three non-voting board members: Music Director and Conductor of the HYSO; Conductor of the HYCO; and Manager of the HYS.
The HYS holds its Annual General Meeting at the beginning of each concert season.
Funding
The HYS is funded by membership fees, by a grant from the Town of Oakville, by corporate sponsors, and by fundraising activities undertaken by the Board and its committees. The Board endeavours to keep membership fees affordable for most families, while maintaining high musical and educational standards.
